Your baby has finally arrived, and you couldn't be happier! A new member of the family! But everything is new for your baby, and when they're just emerging from your tummy, they need to feel contained and snug. That's why, during the first few months of your baby's life, a bassinet is usually the best option for them to sleep. But by the third or fourth month, your baby is already much bigger. You can hardly believe how fast they've grown! That's when they need a crib that gives them a little more space to rest.
Types of cribs
Within the old, modern, colored, appliqué, etc. models, we can find different types of cribs:
Classic crib: With bars, this crib is the classic option for a baby's nursery, and will be used until approximately age 2 (or sooner), when the baby transitions to a bed. Some models come with a two-tier option, allowing for a higher mattress when the baby is younger.
Convertible and functional cribs: These cribs have the option of removable rails for future use as beds. In addition to providing sleeping space for the baby, functional cribs also have removable drawers and/or shelves at one end, so they can be used when the crib is converted into a bed. Some even include a removable changing table above the drawers. The advantage of these cribs is that you don't need to buy a bed when your child needs one, although they tend to be more expensive than classic, simple cribs. In these cases, they can also have two levels to raise the mattress during the baby's first months.
Co-sleeping or "sidecar" cribs: These cribs have only three sides and can be attached to the bed so that the baby can lie next to their parents, but in their own space. These types of cribs usually come with a removable railing to transform them into a standard crib.
When it comes to choosing cribs, moms have the final say, and we all know that mom's decision is always the best decision.
